The At Home Workout That Works

The At Home Workout That Works

At home workouts have always been something that sounded great to me in theory but when it came to the actual execution? Epic fail. I’ve tried it all- and I mean I’ve had everything from MTV dance workout VHS Tapes (hi… I just aged myself) to Beach Body on demand and everything in between.

I would make a plan and have just as much intention as the next girl, but they never excited me enough to actually work out. If I don’t enjoy it, I won’t stick to the plan. I’m a class kind of girl, I love a good group workout. Especially if it’s in some boujee studio like Soulcycle. $40 for a class? Sign me up! *face palm emoji* And then let’s go next door to spend $35 on some green juice. Sold! Oh to be young and single again.

Over the last few years I’ve come to love a good full body weight class. I lost 25 pounds in 2016 with body pump and clean eating. And then I got pregnant. I worked out with a trainer my entire pregnancy and kept up with all of my spin and weight classes. I gelt great, even while slowly gaining a glorious 30 pounds.

After baby I was eager to get back to it. I lost the baby weight fairly quickly but nothing looked the same. I was A LOT more squishy and I couldn’t wait to get back in the gym to tone it up. But a new baby and a gym membership don’t exactly go hand in hand. Over the course of Max’s first year I think I went to the gym 12 times?

The getting out the door, planning the class around nap time, packing back up and driving both ways. It’s too much for this season of life. So I bought an at home barre workout and couldn’t wait to look like one of those long and lean ballerinas. But 3 months later, SURPRISE… I maybe did 3 workouts and still looked exactly the same.

In January of this year, hubs and I spent a long weekend dreaming and planning and just enjoying each others company, kid free at the Omni Homestead. Call me crazy but I love to workout when I’m away so we checked out the gym and there it was, in all of it’s black and red glory. A Peloton bike. I had been interested for a few years. I took my first ride and I was hooked.

I quickly became obsessed with the idea of owning my own. I surveyed everyone on Insta that had one and asked if they actually used it or if eventually turned into a clothing rack? I asked clients if they regretted the purchase like an impulse buy at Target or if the bike was more like that beloved LBD hanging in the closet. I was kind of looking for someone to tell me they never used it or that it was a waste of money so that I could move on and purchase another at home series for a wasted $39.99 per month.

I never received that expected answer. Everyone I asked was in a different season of life. Single, married, mom, grandma, and they all loved their bike. Hubs couldn’t ignore my obsession so he agreed that if I gave up the gym membership and stopped buying online workouts- one of those beautiful black bikes could actually be mine.

If this season of life won’t allow for boujee studio rides it can at least lend itself to a boujee feeling at home ride.Right?

The crazy thing is that I’ve saved money and workout more frequently. Who am I? I’m on week 16 of working out with an average of 23 workouts per month. I’ve lost 10 pounds and I actually really enjoy the rides.

Just like anything in life, you have to do the work to get the results. Owning the bike didn’t mean I would use it. Dang it! So I made a plan and created a routine that works for me. I ride before Max wakes up (most days, I’m not perfect) and it’s my favorite way to start the day. I can either make excuses or make time. Honestly, the instructors make the classes so fun that I (kinda) look forward to it.

If I’m feeling like I need a pep talk, I take one of Alli’s classes and she reminds me that I’m a boss. If I’m feeling fun and want to dance I take a class with Cody so he can remind me that it’s not that serious and to use the 30 seconds of recovery to get my life together. If I’m ready to WORK- Alex reminds me that this ain’t daycare and if I feel good, I look good, and do better. And he has the BEST 90’s hip hop playlists so… I also love to sneak in a country ride with Hannah Marie on Saturday mornings.

When I hop on the bike it’s me-time. I put in my air pods, keep the lights off and zone into the class. It feels like I’m in the studio and I’m not gonna lie- being clipped into the bike definitely helps. With most cardio at home workouts I find 394729386498 reasons to grab something from another room and just take a little break. There’s no break on the bike.

I’m all about the high waisted leggings since becoming a mama and nothing beats these Zella Live In Leggings. I’ve linked them and some other workout gear that I love/wear/use.

If you’re interested in trying the Peloton for yourself, I have a code you can use for $100 in free merchandise. I used this for shoes! The code is: N6YMY4 WHEN SHOPPING ON: ONE PELOTON
